Seeing Red

As Trent mentioned in his sweet post on Friday, I have had a love for red lipstick for quite some time now. I never would have thought of calling it my “signature” thing, but I guess it sort of has become that over the years. As a former dancer, I feel like I’ve been wearing the stuff forever! But it wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school that I made that leap from just wearing it as part of my stage makeup to making it a part of my daily makeup. I remember the evening so well. My mom and I were shopping for Clinique makeup, as we often did back in the day, in Dillards located in Pecanland Mall (what, what!) And I cannot remember the exact reason I wanted red lipstick, maybe I was just bored, but I had the sales person assist me in finding that perfect shade, and this was it! Angel Red!

When I wore it to school, I remember people telling me how cool it was, and how “only I could pull that off.” And of course, that made me feel seriously cool. (mind you, it was just lipstick. Not sure that that actually constitutes increased level of coolness) For Twins Day during Homecoming week, my best friend, Elise, even wore red lipstick because she knew that would be the finishing touch to make us truly twins.  (not really, she was platinum blond and about 5’2″ and I was dark brunette 5’5″)

Anyways, like Trent said, I’ve always worn red lipstick since I’ve known him. But really, I’ve just always loved bold lipstick because it’s so much fun. Trends change, and it may be dark red now, bright red next season, poppy colored, or even fuchsia. Whatever the color, I say go for it! Why not! And don’t tell me you can’t wear it! That’s a lie. I’m telling you, it may take a while, but go to any makeup counter in any department store, Sephora, Ulta, wherever, and try, try, and try again. There’s a shade out there for everyone. You just have to take time to find it.

xoxo,

Dara
